Choosing carpet flooring: asking the right questions

Choosing carpet flooring: asking the right questions

You'll see hundreds of samples during your carpeting shopping expedition, all from different mills. It doesn't have to be overwhelming, though.

You'll see large color palettes and styles from loops to cut-piles and textures at our floor covering company alone. All of them make a stunning design statement.

Be prepared to answer a lot of questions. The carpeting expert will be determining the best grade and style for your home.

The room itself

What will it be used for? The professional will be looking for traffic levels.

What is your family size?

A large family with kids and pets will have different requirements than a small one. These will especially include durability and stain-resistance issues.

What’s the room’s square footage?

This determines the floor covering budget. Also, be sure to include padding installation in the total budget.

Determine your style and color preferences

Colors and style can affect, and be affected, by room size and activity level. For example, a busy room may not be the best place for light-colored carpeting.

Remember to bring photos, paint chips, fabric swatches for coordination purposes. And, remember, the carpet store lighting won't be the same as in your home.

Are you going or staying?

Typically, a seller will choose a simple style and neutral color. However, a homeowner decorating for enjoyment will explore the many varieties available.

Weight alone doesn’t determine carpeting quality

Look at many factors. These include density and twist.
