Autumn: Ideal Time for Carpet Purchase

This is really advice about saving money on your carpet installation. A lot of manufacturers run purchase incentives and promotions, especially in the October-December period. Places often move out merchandise to make room for next year’s introductions.

Be sure to ask your carpet store if anything’s available. That’s not to say that there aren’t discounts and carpet sales offered at other times of the year, so keep your eyes and ears open.

Of course, now that we mention it, you might be doing a lot of entertaining, or having a lot of overnight guests soon, so it’s not a bad idea to think about feathering your nest.

Houston’s Carpet Giant offers some additional cost-saving tips and says you should:

...Measure The Room Correctly

One of the most common ways to pay more than you should, is to buy more than what’s needed.

Of course, some waste will always occur, so you should have some extra on hand just in case, but don’t go overboard. The best way to make sure of this is to measure the room accurately, taking into account baseboards, moldings, closets and other protrusions.

No room is a perfect square, so if you have doubts, be sure to talk to a flooring pro, and it goes without saying that if there’s enough left, don’t discard it, but rather have it made into an area rug.

You should also:

Buy remnants or stock items

Make sure you buy from a place that has a large carpet warehouse. They can cut-to-size and often offer discounts, especially if something is being sold as a “second”, meaning it has a very tiny flaw.

Know Your Fiber

Most of us automatically think nylon, but polyester is also durable and stain-resistant. It’s available in many colors and styles, and is soft and environmentally-friendly.

In certain styles, such as Berber, Olefin becomes strong. It’s always stain and fade-resistant.

Speaking of fibers, be aware that what you might need for the formal living area isn’t necessarily the same as what you’d need in the basement game room.

Look for different grades. Some manufacturers have a “good, better, best,” and the great thing about these grade levels is that you can basically purchase the same product throughout the house, but just as different quality levels as needed.
